After a few years of playing laptop rock shows up and down the West Coast, I've gone back to performing with just solo guitar and voice – yeah I guess you could call it folk – not anti folk cause I don't have issues with folk, not psyche folk cause I don't have the wardrobe or good looks. Experimental pop may be an apt description. Comparisons are often puzzling: Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Syd Barrett, Emmet Rhodes, Violent Femmes, and my favourite compliment at one point was: "all that weird San Francisco shit".
I was been fortunate enough to play with some awesome bands on the west coast including Canned Hamm, Scream Club, P.S. I Love You, Bontempi, Wisely, Lee Hutzulak, Skeletons, Idiots! and many more. In Montreal I have been too lazy to go out and make much of any noise but I'll pull it together one of these days.
I'm a Nova Scotian currently living in Montreal having spent the past few years in Vancouver and before that four years in the woods of Avondale, Nova Scotia, and three years before that in the woods of British Columbia getting weird and conversing with deer, groundhogs, a beagle. I have been making music forever in abject obscurity and sometimes performing with friends Warren Auld, Goody-B. Wiseman, Emily Vey Duke, Shary Boyle.
My music has been featured in video art by Goody-B. Wiseman, Emily Vey Duke & Cooper Battersby, and Zarah Laszlo. A recent piece was featured in The California Biennial as a part of Goody-B. Wiseman's video tribute to the Simon & Garfunkle album, Sounds of Silence/
Years ago I played in bands: Moncton Roadside in Halifax with James Norton, Byron Gaum, Melissa Andrew and Moragh Parks. Furious George in Montreal with Adam Margolis and Rob Viola of Haywood, Ciao Bella, Mr. Coffee Nerves and The Red & The Black. Then The Preppy Relatives in Halifax with Warren Auld of Death Toll, Horseshoes & Handgrenades, Destroyer, World Provider, Royal Mountains and Proper Concern.
In Halifax I organized concerts at The Khyber and Bob & Lori's, most notably the Geek Rock Love Festival, an incredible gig with Jale, Superfriendz and the Preppy Relatives and an ultra-rare solo acoustic show by Chris Murphy of Sloan, Joel Plaskett, Matthew Grimson and myself.
I have also published a lot of zines and f**ked up poetry that you may have seen in couch-surfs at art derelicts homes - Left Hip, Butterbites, Dakini In Bed Pottery and Medicated, Sackville C&A, Honey, Things Are Going To Be Just Great At The Commune, Becomes Cryptic, Lonesome Fugue. Pals Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby and I founded the Prizewinner Series of zines which included works by the three of us, Warren Auld, Stephen Clayton Ellwood, and others.
Well that's a bit about me, I hope you like the music.
